Integration – sustainable exploitation of wetlands and other small water bodies

 

Whilst wetland ecosystems elsewhere in the world are supporting wildlife, livestock and human population, unsustainable encroachment upon them in in some places in Zimbabwe is threating life as we know it. Rural community based freshwater aquaculture is adding to the reasons for populations living around and depending on wetlands to safe guard and protect them.

Fish for the house – fish for the market

 

Fish farming has many benefits to participating households. Most farmers either diversify their diet or add on to their household income through selling fish. Moreover household dietary diversity under the integrated agriculture aquaculture approach not only adds protein but vitamins as seasonal small scale horticultural cropping is enabled.
